Thanks to Kindle-like technology, printed books are going to sleep with the dinosaurs? Bookstores and libraries will soon resemble Greek ruins? Come on...twenty years ago they told us that the computer age would lead us into a paperless society. Didn't happen. Will it ever? Perhaps––when we run out of trees and rags, maybe. Granted, digital technology has cut back on the use of some paper--for example, order forms, checks, greeting cards, stationary, and yes, even books. And some bookstores have gone belly-up. But is the printed book really headed for extinction?
We humans are sensual creatures. The sense of touch is basic to our being and knowing and connecting with the world. The tactile sensation of holding a book is a major component of enjoying the read. Or is that only true for us dinosaurs?
